No Depression Opinion Poll - Opinion Poll from Issue #59 Sept-Oct 2005

10th Anniversary Issue

The Top 25 Cd's mid-1995 through mid-2005

The Story So Far. . .THE 25 TOP CDs. . .mid-1995 through mid-2005
We’ve written about a lot of good records in ten years, so narrowing that down to the very best of the (ahem) No Depression era means crossing off plenty of worthy contenders along the way. We asked ND‘s senior and contributing editors to help us compile this list; what follows is the closest measure of consensus to emerge from our 19 voters.

It’s worth noting that several artists suffered from having votes spread among their various releases. Buddy Miller was the prime example, with five different records receiving votes (four solo albums plus his collaborative disc with wife Julie Miller). Alejandro Escovedo and Robbie Fulks each had four releases getting votes; Steve Earle had three solo discs plus his collaboration with the Del McCoury band. Others with three albums cited were Johnny Cash, Gillian Welch, Wilco, the Jayhawks, Dolly Parton, the Old 97′s, Patty Griffin, and Jon Dee Graham.

The rules: Voters submitted a list of 20 records. First-place received 20 points, second-place 19, and so on; alternatively, unranked lists were counted at 10.5 points for each entry. Only albums appearing on at least three voters’ lists were included in the top 25.

  • Stackridge, Farncombe Music Club (UK, 5/18/12)
I first started going to live gigs in my early teens. I was underage. I lied about my date of birth so that I could become a member of Friars, a music club based in Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire. Life membership was 25p. I still have my member’s card. Wild Turkey in June 1971 was the first live band I saw and some forty one years later I am still occupyin […]

  • The Last Time I Saw Gram Parsons
By Bill Conrad (His Prep School Pal)

Summer of 1969, I was in London when I saw a flyer advertising the Byrds at Royal Albert Hall. Melody Maker, the local music news, suggested that a few Beatles and Stones might attend. That was incentive enough for me.
The Byrds took the stage and launched into "Turn, Turn, Turn."  Other than band leader Rog […]
  • Davina and the Vagabonds at Newcastle Cluny II
The Cluny, Newcastle Thursday 17th May 2012 Alan Harrison One of my greatest pleasures is discovering new music any of its shapes and forms and tonight was a bit of a revelation as I had only ventured out of the house because there was nothing on TV. As the support act finished there were only about 30 people scattered around The Cluny and perhaps 75 were sc […]
